Makigumi, the company that operates Roopt, is constantly researching case studies and other information on revitalizing vacant houses and publishing them as columns.
Following its recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, Ishinomaki City is attracting attention as a model for regional revitalization. This city, which suffered immense damage from the earthquake, is taking a new step forward through creative reconstruction and sustainable urban development. Playing a central role in this is our company, Makigumi Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Makigumi"), a creative team operating locally in Ishinomaki.
In Ishinomaki City, we are actively working on regional revitalization to prevent population decline and realize a safe and secure life through the formulation of the "Ishinomaki City Comprehensive Strategy for Creating Towns, People, and Jobs." This strategy aims to realize a "future city" based on the principles of the SDGs and overcome the challenges of a declining birthrate, an aging population, and population decrease.
Makigumi has undertaken numerous projects to renovate vacant houses in Ishinomaki City and repurpose them as spaces that attract creative talent. These vacant houses have become attractive living spaces for artists, entrepreneurs, and other people whose needs are not easily met by the conventional housing market, contributing to regional revitalization. For example, a woman who runs a dressmaking and woodworking business has moved in and is also engaged in farming and raising chickens in the woods behind the house. Such initiatives support the unique lifestyles of each resident and propose a more sustainable way of interacting with housing.
To support artists whose livelihoods have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Makigumi launched the "Creative Hub" project. This project provides artists with rent-free accommodation in shared housing and opportunities to present their work and performances at local events. This initiative contributes to strengthening local communities and promoting resource circulation.
Ishinomaki City, through the ingenuity and sustainable efforts of local organizations such as Maki-gumi, has become a successful example of regional revitalization that goes beyond mere recovery from the earthquake. These activities are creating new value in the region and realizing an environment where people can pursue a way of life that brings them genuine joy. These initiatives offer significant insights to other regional cities and serve as a model for regional revitalization.
